Short Itinerary – (4 Days / 3 Nights)

Day 1: Drive from Rishikesh/Haridwar to Chopta

Day 2: Trek from Chopta to Tungnath Temple → Chandrashila summit → return to Chopta

Day 3: Buffer day / Local exploration around Chopta meadows or Deoria Tal trek

Day 4: Drive back to Rishikesh/Haridwar

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Rishikesh/Haridwar to Chopta (Drive)

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Rishikesh/Haridwar to Chopta, the base camp for the Tungnath – Chandrashila trek. The route passes through Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Ukhimath, following the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. Arrive at Chopta, surrounded by lush meadows and dense forests, often called the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand.” Overnight stay in Chopta.

Day 2: Trek from Chopta to Tungnath Temple → Chandrashila Summit → Return to Chopta

After an early breakfast, start the trek from Chopta towards Tungnath. The trail is a well-paved stone path passing through rhododendron forests and vast meadows. Reach Tungnath Temple (3,680 m), the highest Shiva temple in the world. After offering prayers, continue the steep climb of about 1.5 km to Chandrashila summit, which rewards you with panoramic views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath peaks. Descend back to Chopta for overnight stay.

Day 3: Buffer Day / Deoria Tal Trek (Optional)

This day can be used as a buffer for weather conditions or to explore nearby attractions. One popular option is a short drive to Sari village, followed by a trek to Deoria Tal (2,438 m), a beautiful high-altitude lake known for reflecting the Chaukhamba massif. Return to Chopta in the evening. Overnight stay in Chopta.

Day 4: Chopta to Rishikesh/Haridwar (Drive)

After breakfast, drive back to Rishikesh/Haridwar with beautiful memories of the trek. The journey ends with arrival by evening.

The trek is graded easy to moderate. The trail is short but involves a steep climb near Chandrashila. Beginners and families can comfortably attempt it.

What is the best time to do this trek?

The trek is best done from March to May (spring with rhododendron blooms) and September to December (clear skies and snow patches). In winter (Jan–Feb), the trail often remains snowbound.

Can beginners join this trek?

Yes, this is one of the best beginner-friendly treks in Uttarakhand. Basic fitness (ability to walk 4–5 km uphill) is recommended.

What peaks can be seen from Chandrashila?
