Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Reach Gangotri (10,000 ft)

Arrive at Gangotri, the holy town on the banks of River Bhagirathi. Gangotri is not only the starting point of the trek but also one of the Char Dhams. Spend the evening exploring the Gangotri temple, taking an acclimatization walk, and preparing for the trek. Overnight stay in a guesthouse or hotel.

Day 2: Gangotri to Bhoj Kharak (6–7 km | 5–6 hrs)

The trek begins with a steep ascent through pine and bhoj (birch) forests. Cross a wooden bridge over the Kedar Ganga River, a tributary believed to be a gift from Lord Shiva to Bhagirathi. The trail is narrow at some sections with a sharp drop on one side, making it thrilling. Bhoj Kharak is a small camping ground with views of snow peaks in the distance. Overnight in tents.

Day 3: Bhoj Kharak to Kedar Kharak (5–6 km | 4–5 hrs)

A relatively easier trek compared to the previous day. The route opens up into vast alpine meadows with stunning views of peaks like Thalay Sagar and Bhrigupanth. Kedar Kharak is one of the most beautiful campsites of the trek, surrounded by mountains and a crystal-clear stream flowing nearby. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 4: Kedar Kharak to Kedar Tal and back (10 km round trip | 7–8 hrs)

This is the most challenging but rewarding day of the trek. The trail is steep, rocky, and passes through moraine and scree sections. After a tough climb, you reach the spectacular Kedar Tal at 15,500 ft. The turquoise waters of the lake perfectly reflect the mighty Thalay Sagar peak, one of the most beautiful sights in the Himalayas. Spend some time at the lake before returning to Kedar Kharak for the night.

Day 5: Kedar Kharak to Gangotri via Bhoj Kharak (11–12 km | 6–7 hrs)

Retrace your steps through the meadows and forests, descending all the way back to Gangotri. The trail feels different as you walk back, with downhill sections opening up new perspectives of the mountains. Overnight stay in Gangotri.

Day 6: Departure from Gangotri

After breakfast, depart from Gangotri and drive towards Uttarkashi/Dehradun/Rishikesh as per your onward journey. Trek ends with memories of one of the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in the Garhwal Himalayas.
